Enabling Verified Mode

Verified mode must now be enabled on Chromebooks. This setting enhances test security. Once you enable it for the organizational unit where Bluebook is installed, any device added later will inherit the setting.

If Bluebook Isn’t Installed

If Bluebook isn’t installed already, go to How to Install Bluebook on Chromebooks for complete instructions, including the steps to enable verified mode.

If Bluebook Is Installed

If Bluebook is already installed on your Chromebooks, take the steps listed below to enable verified mode.

Part 1: Allow Enterprise Challenge 

  1. Use your administrator account to sign in to the Admin console at admin.google.com.
  2. Go to Devices > Chrome > Apps & extensions > Kiosks.
  3. Select the organizational unit where Bluebook is installed.
  4. Select Bluebook from the Apps list to view its kiosk settings.
  5. Scroll down and click the caret to expand the extension ID.
  6. Set Allow enterprise challenge to enabled.
  7. Click SAVE in the upper right corner of the screen.

Part 2: Require Verified Mode Boot 

To configure verified boot mode in the same organizational unit where Bluebook is installed, take the steps listed below. Learn how to configure it in a higher organizational unit instead. 

  1. Without exiting the organizational unit, go to Devices > Chrome > Settings.
  2. Click the Device Settings tab at the top of the screen and select Verified mode.

Important: If you don’t see the device settings tab, you might not have the necessary permissions. Contact someone else in your IT department. 

  1. Make sure Inheritance is set to Locally applied.   
  2. Set Configuration to Require verified mode boot for verified access.
  3. Paste this email into the Services with full access field:
  1. Click Save.

Part 3: Check the Configuration  

  1. Open Bluebook on some of your testing devices and click Test Your Device on the sign-in screen. If you see a checkmark next to Verified Mode, you configured the setting correctly. If you don’t, these troubleshooting tips might help.
  2. Open Bluebook on a device belonging to any lower organizational units to make sure they inherited the verified mode boot setting. Devices for students with accommodations might be assigned to a lower OU, for example.  
  3. Important: To avoid file corruption, wait a few minutes before closing Bluebook so it can load the extension. Find out how to detect and fix a corrupted file.

FAQ

Why are my school’s Chromebooks getting errors about verified mode even though I enabled it?

If verified mode is configured correctly on a Chromebook running a supported version of ChromeOS, you shouldn’t receive an error message. The issues described below could generate an error message. 

Verified mode is only partially enabled. Correct configuration includes two parts, allowing enterprise challenge and requiring verified mode boot. Make sure both parts were completed. Tip: The email required in part 2 must be entered without capital letters, spaces, or other modifications.

The device is running ChromeOS Flex. To keep our tests secure, we prohibit testing on ChromeOS Flex, which is run on old PCs and Macs. Only devices built as Chromebooks can pass the verified mode check. 

To find out if a device is running ChromeOS Flex: 

  1. Open the Chrome browser. 

  2. Enter chrome://version in the address bar.  

  3. Locate the customization ID. If it’s reven, the device is running ChromeOS Flex.

How do I configure Chromebook verified mode in a higher organizational unit?

If you’re configuring verified mode in an organizational unit (OU) higher than the OU where Bluebook is installed, follow these alternate instructions for requiring verified boot mode.  

Before you start: Complete Part 1 and Part 2 on How to Install Bluebook on Chromebooks or complete Part 1 on Enabling Verified Mode.

  1. Use your administrator account to sign in to your Admin console at admin.google.com.
  2. In the OU where Bluebook is installed, go to Devices > Chrome > Settings.  
  3. Click the Device Settings tab at the top of the screen and select Verified mode.  

Important: If you don’t see the device settings tab, you might not have the necessary permissions. Contact someone else in your IT department.

  1. Switch the Inheritance option from locally applied to inherited so that this OU inherits the verified mode setting from its parent OU.
  2. Click Save.
  3. Navigate to the higher OU and go to Devices > Chrome > Settings.
  4. Click the Settings tab and select Verified mode.  
  5. Make sure Inheritance is set to Locally applied.
  6. Set Configuration to Require verified mode boot for verified access.
  7. Paste the email below in to the Services with full access field:

  2. Return to How to Install Bluebook on Chromebooks or Enabling Verified Mode to check your work.
