Chromebook Requirements

School-managed Chromebooks from 2017 or later are supported. On Chromebooks, Bluebook must be run in kiosk mode, so it’s available only on Chromebooks managed through the Admin console in Google Workspace. Students cannot test on personal Chromebooks.

School-managed Chromebooks can be shared or assigned to students 1-to-1. Students who borrow a shared Chromebook to take the SAT Weekend must complete exam setup on the same device they take the test on.

Learn how we determine technical requirements and how frequently they’re updated.

Operating Systems

  • Required minimum: ChromeOS 114
  • Recommended maximum: ChromeOS 126

Bluebook can’t be installed on versions below the required minimum, and it won’t be supported on versions higher than the maximum. We strongly recommend preventing automatic operating system updates to avoid technical issues on test day.

We align our recommended maximum version to the long-term support (LTS) channel and will update it when LTS updates. Google recommends LTS for school-managed Chromebooks because it prioritizes stability.

Free Storage

Bluebook requires at least 1 GB free storage. If your school reuses testing devices within a testing window, we recommend checking between uses to make sure 1 GB is available each time a student starts testing.

On Chromebooks, it’s difficult to measure storage available to Bluebook, but insufficient space can cause the loss of student answers and other issues. To avoid problems, clear user profiles and perform other cleansing activities shortly before test day. Learn more about clearing user profiles.

Monitors and Screen Displays

  • Minimum laptop screen size: 10 inches
  • Minimum screen resolution: 1024 x 768
  • Second monitor not permitted

Mice and Keyboards

  • Mice are allowed on all tests.
  • Wired mice are recommended.
  • Bluetooth mice are allowed but should be fully charged to last the duration of the exam.
  • External keyboards are not allowed for use with Chromebooks.

Power

  • AP Exams: Testing devices must hold a charge for at least 4 hours.
  • SAT Weekend and SAT Suite: Testing devices must hold a charge for at least 3 hours.
