Device Requirements
Bluebook™ supports testing on Mac and Windows devices, iPads, and school-managed Chromebooks.
Choosing Device Types
If you’re deciding between device types, consider these key factors:
- Minimum battery life is 4 hours for AP Exams and 3 hours for SAT Suite of Assessments.
- Free space requirement for Windows is 250 MB for 1 exam (and 50 MB for each additional exam) and 150 MB (and 50 MB for each additional exam) for all other device types.
- Chromebooks must be school-managed, run in kiosk mode, and from 2017 or later.
- External keyboards are required for AP Exams taken on iPads.
Note: Be sure to review the complete specifications before you install.

Managed Chromebook Specifications
School-managed Chromebooks from 2017 or later are supported. Bluebook must be run in kiosk mode, so it’s available only on Chromebooks managed through the Admin console in Google Workspace. Students cannot test on personal Chromebooks.
School-managed Chromebooks can be shared or assigned to students 1-to-1. Students who borrow a shared Chromebook to take the SAT Weekend must complete exam setup on the same device they take the test on.
Operating Systems
Use ChromeOS 114+ to safeguard student answers and to make sure Bluebook has the latest security updates and bug fixes from Google.
Available only on 114+: Bluebook saves its local cache and restores it if a device loses Wi-Fi or power during an exam—even if your Chromebook fleet is set to erase local user data. If your Chromebooks use a version lower than 114, make sure they’re set to “Do not erase local user data” to prevent the loss of student test answers on sign out or reboot.
Important: Bluebook won’t run on operating systems below ChromeOS 102.
Minimum Hardware Specifications
Requires at least 150 MB of storage for one exam (plus 50 MB for each additional exam).
Tip: If you’re using shared devices, you can free up space and memory by clearing user profiles that you no longer need.
