Mac Requirements

Supported Mac devices vary by test:

  • AP Exams and SAT Suite: School-managed and personal Mac laptops and Mac desktops. School-managed laptops can be shared or assigned to students 1-to-1.
  • SAT Weekend: School-managed and personal Mac laptops. Students who borrow a shared laptop to take the SAT Weekend must complete exam setup on the same device they take the test on.

Learn how we determine technical requirements and how frequently we update them.

Operating Systems

  • Required minimum: macOS 11.7.5
  • Recommended maximum: macOS 14.6.1
  • Not recommended: macOS 15

Bluebook can’t be installed on versions below the required minimum, and it won’t be supported on versions higher than the maximum. To avoid technical issues on test day, do not upgrade macOS to the major version released in early fall and prevent any automatic updates during fall testing.

Minimum Hardware Specifications

  • 1 GHz processor.
  • 2 GB RAM.
  • At least 1 GB free storage.
  • If your school reuses testing devices within a testing window, we recommend checking between uses to make sure 1 GB is available each time a student starts testing.

Note: Intel and Apple processors are supported.

Monitors and Screen Displays

  • Minimum laptop screen size: 10 inches
  • Minimum screen resolution: 1024 x 768
  • Second monitor not permitted

Mice and Keyboards

  • Mice are allowed on all tests.
  • Wired mice are recommended.
  • Bluetooth mice should be fully charged to last the duration of the exam.
  • External keyboards are not allowed for use with Mac laptops.

Power

  • AP Exams: Testing devices must hold a charge for at least 4 hours.
  • SAT Weekend and SAT Suite: Testing devices must hold a charge for at least 3 hours.
