iPad Requirements

School-managed and personal iPads are supported. School-managed iPads can be shared or assigned 1-to-1. Students who borrow a shared iPad to take the SAT Weekend must complete exam setup on the same device they take the test on.

Learn how we determine technical requirements and how frequently we update them.

Supported Models

  • iPad Pro
  • iPad Air 2 or later
  • iPad (5th generation or later)
  • iPad Mini 4 or later

Operating Systems

  • Required minimum: iPadOS 15.0
  • Excluded: iPadOS 17.0.0–17.0.3 is not supported
  • Recommended maximum: iPadOS 17.6.1
  • Not recommended: iPadOS 18

Bluebook can’t be installed on versions below the required minimum, and it won’t be supported on versions higher than the maximum. To avoid technical issues on test day, do not upgrade iPadOS to the major version released in early fall and prevent any automatic updates during fall testing.

Minimum Hardware Specifications

  • 16 GB+ total storage.
  • At least 250 MB free storage.

Monitors and Screen Displays

  • Minimum tablet size: 8 inches
  • Minimum screen resolution: 1024 x 768
  • Second monitor not permitted

Mice and Keyboards

  • Mice are allowed on all tests.
  • Physical keyboards are required for AP Exams and allowed on all other tests.
  • Wired peripherals are recommended.
  • Bluetooth mice and keyboards are allowed but should be fully charged to last the duration of the exam.
