Prepare a School-Managed Chromebook
If you’re using a school-managed Chromebook at a school you don’t attend or at a test center, start getting ready early because you’ll need someone at your school to install Bluebook and adjust device settings. You can’t test on a personal Chromebook.
IMPORTANT: You probably won’t have the permissions you need to fix issues on test day, and test day staff won’t either.
Who Should Follow These Instructions
Take action now if one of the following is true:
- You’re using a school-managed device to take SAT Weekend.
- You’re using a school-managed device to take AP Exams, SAT School Day, or PSAT assessments at a test center or a school you don’t attend.
If you're only taking AP Exams, SAT School Day, or PSAT assessments at the school you attend, the school is responsible for preparing school-managed devices and you don’t need to keep reading.
Chromebooks Must Be School Managed
Any student who wants to test on a Chromebook needs someone at their school to install Bluebook and apply required settings. That’s because Bluebook is available only on Chromebooks managed by your school through the Admin console in Google Workspace.
Let your school know if you have trouble completing the steps below.
Because Bluebook runs in kiosk mode, you may be unfamiliar with the experience even if you use Chromebooks frequently. Learn how to open Bluebook on a Chromebook and use accessibility features.
What Your School Needs to Do
Your school should refer to the Chromebook Checklist for instructions. Complete a form, and we'll ask them to help you.
- Check the device to make sure it complies with all hardware and software requirements.
- Install Bluebook with verified mode enabled.
- If Bluebook was already installed, enable verified mode.
- Check the network auto-connect setting to make sure you can connect to Wi-Fi at your SAT Weekend test center, even if it’s not your school.
- Make sure Bluebook is allowed to auto-update and that all other required settings are applied.
- Clear space on your testing device.
- Enable the floating accessibility menu if you test with approved accommodations.

FAQ
How do I clear space on my school-managed Chromebook?
- Sign in to your Chromebook.
- Select the time at the bottom right of your screen.
- Go to Settings > Storage Management.
- If you have less than 1 GB of free space, try deleting files you don’t need, clearing your browsing data, or asking for help at school.
What should I do if I see a message on my Chromebook that verified mode is not configured correctly?
You can’t fix this yourself, so ask for help at school. Bluebook won’t work on your Chromebook unless it’s managed by your school, has verified mode enabled, and meets all requirements. They can learn more at bluebook.org/verified-mode.
What happens when I click Test Your Device in the Bluebook app?
When you click Test Your Device, Bluebook checks the operating system, memory, and free space. It also identifies some settings that prevent successful testing. You’ll find out if you need to:
Update your operating system.
Clear space.
Use a different device, one with more memory.
However, a few rare but prohibited settings that prevent testing can’t be checked before test day. These are most common in school-managed devices, so if you’re using one to take SAT Weekend it’s especially important to ask for help at school. Complete a form, and we'll ask for you.
If the device doesn’t have enough memory, you can’t test on it. Try another device or request a device for SAT Weekend from College Board.
