Approved Testing Devices
Attention Windows Users: We strongly recommend upgrading to Windows 11 before Microsoft ends support of Windows 10 in October.
You can run Bluebook on a Windows or Mac device, an iPad, or a school-managed Chromebook.
You cannot run Bluebook on a personal Chromebook or mobile phone.
In addition to the requirements listed below, your device must:
- Connect to the Wi-Fi network your school or test center uses for Bluebook testing.
- Hold a charge for 3–4 hours; we recommend you bring a portable charger or your device’s power cord, but you might not have access to an outlet.
For Windows
The recommended version is Windows 11. S mode and Windows 11 SE are not supported.
Using Windows 10 after Microsoft ends support in October 2025 poses a security risk, and we strongly recommend upgrading to Windows 11. Starting in fall 2026, Bluebook won’t work on Windows 10.
Your device needs 1 GB of available space.
If you’re testing with a laptop, external keyboards are not permitted.
External mice are permitted.
For Windows tablets, external keyboards are required for fully digital AP Exams and recommended for hybrid digital AP Exams. They’re strongly recommended for the SAT and PSAT-related assessments.
For Macs
The minimum version is macOS 12.0 and the recommended maximum is macOS 15.5.
Your device needs 1 GB of available space.
If you’re testing with a laptop, external keyboards are not permitted.
External mice are permitted.
Important: Apple usually releases upgrades to macOS in early fall. To avoid technical issues on test day, do not upgrade until after the test.
For iPads
The minimum version is iPadOS 16 and the recommended maximum is iPadOS 18.5. Versions 17–17.0.3 are not supported.
Your device needs 250 MB of available space.
External mice are permitted.
AP Exams: External keyboards are required for fully digital testing and recommended for hybrid testing.
SAT and PSAT-related assessments: External keyboards are permitted.
Important: Apple usually releases upgrades to iPadOS in early fall. To avoid technical issues on test day, do not upgrade until after the test.
For Chromebooks
You can only run Bluebook on a school-managed Chromebook—you cannot use a personal Chromebook. Find out if your Chromebook is managed by your school.
Bluebook is supported on ChromeOS 132 and higher. ChromeOS Flex is not supported
Your device needs at least 1 GB of available space. Ask your school to free up space to prevent technical issues on test day.
External keyboards are not permitted.
